The Discipline of the United Methodist Church provides that the Commission shall collect and preserve the historically significant records of the Conference, encourage and assist local churches in preserving, compiling and celebrating their heritage, and otherwise protect and promote the heritage of Methodism within the Conference area.

The Commission maintains an archive at the Conference Center in Cicero, NY. The Archive is open by appointment only. Its typical holdings are Conference records and the records of closed churches within the Conference. Finding aids have been prepared for certain aspects of the holdings and work continues to make archives available for research.
