NCNY@General Conference 2004

By Everett Bassett
Dr. Thom White Wolf Fassett brings the perspective of seven previous General Conferences to the 2004 gathering. Asked to reflect on the beginning of today's Conference compared to others he has attended, Dr. Fassett expressed some concern about a 'less spirited unity' in the meeting. General Conference needs a 'grand beginning' that expresses our 'community and embracing of each other in our differences.'
'Just as we carry the cross into our sanctuary to center our worship experience, so we should carry the cross (into General Conference) as a way to ameliorate our differences.'
Dr. Fassett holds hope that this Conference will continue to uphold what for him has been the highlight through the years 'to understand our great denomination's unity in Jesus Christ throughout the world."
His special interest in issues of peace and justice has focused not only his activities at General Conference, but all of his ministry, including his present appointment as district superintendent of the Finger Lakes South District of our Annual Conference.
Fassett is optimistic because of the resources already in place in our denomination. "We've got everything we need (to fulfill our mission)."
