Cherie White (left) and Joyce Hill, Spanish-English translators, provide delegates to the 2004 United Methodist General Conference in Pittsburgh with simultaneous translation. The General Conference proceedings are being translated into nine languages. The interpreters sit in booths at the rear of the press tables, and each of those persons requiring an interpreter wear a headset. When a non-English speaking delegate wishes to be heard from the floor he or she speaks into the microphone in a native tongue which is then interpreted into English for the delegation.
