Southern Sudan Health Projects Mission Team Update - April 10, 2008

Hi all,

Well after traveling 24 hours, we finally arrived in Kampala. It was 8:00 p.m. Uganda time, 12:00 p.m. our time. By the time we got to the hotel, it was about 10:00 p.m. I have a lessson learned already, never ride in the front seat in Uganda. They drive on the left side of the road and pass on the right. We had five cars (counting all the luggage) and my car left last and arrived first at the hotel. These roads are only two lanes including pedestrian and scooter traffic, and it was quite an adventure just getting to the hotel. I thought we were going to side-swipe half the cars we passed.

We had a lovely breakfast this morning and after a torrential down pour, we met the District Superentendant of Kampala, Rev James Mwoho who brought us a vehicle and driver. From there we were able to get some photos and go to the Goverment of Southern Sudan Office for our travel permits.

After lunch (we went to a Ethiopian resturant) we traveled out to the country and went to a UMC Uganda orphanage and boarding school. We were late getting there and the children all waited for us. It was quite amazing how well behaved and nice these kids were and we enjoyed the visit very much.

All of this took many hours of driving the roads are packed with cars, scooter bikes and people walking down the road. We finally ended up at the Del and Debbie Braaksma home for dinner. Del and Debbie are missionaries, working with the Southern Sudan Reconcilation project helping to reconcile there. I was bringing some books and cds from Pastor Lucie of the Reformed Church to them and they invited us to dinner. We had great time and learned a lot from them.

Well my Internet session is about to expire its past 11:00 p.m. and I am exhausted. I tried to add as many people to my email list, please pass to anyone I missed.

Yours in Christ

Mark
